WHERE WE MAKE AN IMPACT

ZOSLU Lubambashi DRC

In 2015, BPI decided to launch a programme to provide healthcare services. The city which is the economic and healthcare center of the mining region in South East DRC will benefit from ultramodern healthcare interventions including trauma, obstetric and neonatal support and paediatric care for children under five.

The aim was to leapfrog healthcare delivery by providing an ultramodern healthcare facility with advance focus specialties that not only will reduce infant mortality, as well as the number of deaths during pregnancy and childbirth, but will be financially independent and sustainable and will provide an anchor for community economic development. Using green energy and local treated water we planned Zoslu Kinshasa to be net positive energy and water supply. Zoslu Kinshasa is planned to provide capacity building to the local healthcare providers community as well as to all supportive services the the Zoslu campus.

About Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the first sub-Saharan country, where BPI plan to launch its healthcare facility in collaboration with community leaders and local foundation in 2016. A long series of conflicts has ravaged the DRC throughout the 1990s, destroying most of the Central African country's infrastructure. Recovery continues to be a slow and complex process, making the DRC one of the least developed – and most desperate – countries in Africa.

In much of the DRC, living conditions are dismal, access to health care is minimal, and violence still erupts in unstable areas. Rape and violence against women may be more common in the DRC than anywhere else in the world. Though rich in resources that allow hope for a bright future as a thriving country, the DRC is still in dire need of economic and social reconstruction.

According to a 2008 United Nations report, the DRC has a population of over 57.5 million people. Of these:

  • 75 percent live below the poverty line.
  • More than half have no access to drinking water or to basic healthcare.
  • Three out of every 10 children are poorly nourished.
  • Up to 20 percent of children won't live past the age of five, and nearly half will die before their 40th birthday.

Without a doubt, the Congolese people are in dire need for assistance so as to achieve their potential for a healthy, peaceful and productive future.
